I was 21 and burnt out having studied realist theory of changing the world around you, but not being able to apply it. Suddenly these Girls Rock! Camps seemed like a cool way of creating a world where girls voices were encouraged and seen.
A space without cis men, which is especially rare in music. After uni I saved up some money and travelled to Portland for my first Girls Rock! I absolutely loved it and was inspired by all of these young women who were so fearless and cool. Well, the structure of the programs and their values are the same. Young people form a band on the Monday and have written a song by the end of the week. There is complete freedom of expression.
