The Spotlight icon is a magnifying glass and is located on the top right-hand of the menu bar. Click on this to open Spotlight.

Once you open Spotlight a search box appears. Start typing the name of the Application you want to open. The moment it appears, hit Enter and the Application will open. Launchpad is on the Dock. The icon is a silver circle with a black rocket inside. If the icon is not there, locate it in the Finder and Dock instructions above and drag it onto the Dock. Select any icon to open that Application. In the pane below the list, System Information shows a variety of details about the app.
